现有机构设置分为研究、开发和管理三大系统,包括种质资源、群体改良、高产育种、品质育种、栽培生理、生物技术、分子育种等7个研究室,4个合资公司。现有职工60人。其中,研究员13人、副研究员4人、助理研究员8人,具有博士学历的6人、硕士学历的8人。先后选派赴美国、英国、法国、加拿大、墨西哥、泰国、印尼等国家业务考察26人次,攻读学位、业务进修和合作研究16人次。
已建成玉米品质分析实验室、分子育种实验室、种子质量检测实验室、遗传育种实验室、光合测定实验室、生理生化和生物工程实验室,拥有光合测定系统、品质分析仪等大中型仪器40多台。建成种子精选、包装加工车间、种质资源楼、低温库、育种工作间、种子仓库等建筑面积达10000平方米,济南育种试验田700 亩, 海南育种试验田150 亩,固定资产6000余万元。
先后主持承担联合国开发计划署(UNDP)援华玉米项目、国家“863”抗虫转基因玉米育种项目、948重大专项、科技成果转化资金项目、农业结构调整重大技术研究专项、山东省科技厅良种产业化项目、国家科技支撑计划重大专项“超级玉米新品种选育与产业化开发”项目、行业科技和国家玉米产业体系项目等。先后荣获国家和省、部级科技进步成果奖40多项。育成一批高产优质多抗玉米杂交种——鲁玉13号、鲁单50、鲁单 981、鲁单984、鲁单661、鲁单999、鲁单9002 、鲁单9006、鲁单6006、鲁单8009、鲁单6018、鲁单8013、鲁单6028、鲁单9023等。其中,鲁玉13号荣获农业部科技进步二等奖;鲁单50荣获山东省科技进步一等奖;新育成的优质、高产、多抗、中早熟玉米杂交种鲁单981 ,有效地解决了高产与早熟的矛盾,是近年国内玉米育种上的重大突破,荣获国家科技进步二等奖和山东省科技进步一等奖。
先后发表研究论文400余篇,编写学术专著9部。主编《中国玉米栽培学》、《玉米生理》、《山东玉米》等3 部学术专著;参加编著《全国玉米种质资源目录》、《中国玉米品种志》等7部学术专著,编著科普书籍10余部,有力地促进了全国玉米科研和生产的发展。

Maize Institute of Shandong Academy of Agricultural Sciences locates at Jinan, the famous “Spring City” in China and the capital city of Shandong province, whose latitude is 37º North and the longitude is 117º East.
The institute was set up in 1979. It began the studies on breeding, cultivation and physiology since 1946. National Maize Improvement Sub-center (Jinan) was set up in 1997. It was estimated as one of the top 100-institute of agricultural sciences by MOA of China in 1996 and the top-rank institute by the Department of Science and Technology of Shandong Province in 1998.
The Institute consists of 14 sections, including 7 academic sections (Quality Breeding, High Yield Breeding, Germplasm Research, Population Improvement, Biotechnology, Molecule Breeding, Physiology & Cultivation Research), 2 management offices and 5 Extension branches. It also has 4 seed joint venture companies set up in China.
There are 60 staffs in this Institute, including 13 professors, 4 associate professors, 8 assistant professors, 6 PhDs and 8 masters. Most of the staffs had an experience abroad and 10 of them stayed abroad for more than half a year in America, England, France, Mexico, Indonesia, Thailand, etc. benefited from the projects of the government and UNDP.
More functional labs were built, including Maize Quality Analysis Lab, Maize Molecule Breeding Lab, Maize Seed Quality Examination Lab, Maize Genetics and Breeding Lab, Photosynthesis Determination Lab, Physiology- biochemistry and Bioengineering Lab, which had 40 large and medium instruments. More buildings were used to maize seed process and preservation, whose acreages were more than 10,000 m2. The acreage of breeding land was 500 mu.
The research programs are mainly from UNDP, MOA of China, Ministry of Science and Technology of China and the Government of Shandong Province, etc. More than 40 projects were awarded various national and provincial prizes. More than 20 hybrids have been successfully released by this institute, like Lu nuo 6(waxy), LD50, LD981, LD984, which have been widely planted in China with an annual area of almost 1 million ha. The “LD” brand registered by the institute is becoming very famous in China. The elite inbred lines, Qi205, Qi319 and lx9801 released by this institute have been widely used in several heterotic patterns popular in China. Among these hybrids, Lu yu 13 was awarded second-rank prize of “Science and Technology Advancement Prize” by MOA, LD 50 was awarded first-rank prize of “Science and Technology Advancement Prize” by Shandong Province. This institute also keeps ahead on germplasm, biotechnology, physiology and cultivation researches in China. More than 400 papers and 9 monographs, like Chinese Maize Cultivation, Maize Physiology, etc. were published.
